Troubleshooting guide

Fridge, washing machine & microwave problems — and how to check them yourself

Many appliance faults come down to a setting, a blocked filter or a worn seal. Work through the safe checks below first. If the problem stays, KLIMTECH engineers provide doorstep refrigerator, washing machine and microwave service across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai with transparent visit charges.

Refrigerator

Fridge not cooling, icing up or leaking water

Check the simple causes before assuming a gas or compressor problem — a blocked vent or dirty coil is far more common.

Fridge is running but not cooling

Likely causes

  • Thermostat / temperature dial set too low
  • Air vents blocked by overpacked shelves
  • Dirty condenser coils at the back
  • Refrigerant (gas) leak or weak compressor

Safe checks you can do

  1. Set the dial to a mid or higher cooling setting and wait 4-6 hours.
  2. Leave a finger-gap around the vents inside so cold air can circulate.
  3. Switch off at the socket and gently dust the coils and rear grill.
  4. Make sure the fridge has 4-6 inches of clearance from the wall.

When to call an engineer: If the freezer chills but the fridge stays warm, or the back is completely cool to touch, it usually points to a gas leak or compressor fault — that needs a technician with gauges and a leak test.

Heavy ice build-up in the freezer

Likely causes

  • Torn or loose door gasket
  • Door left ajar or opened very often
  • Defrost timer / heater failure

Safe checks you can do

  1. Close the door on a paper slip — if it pulls out easily, the gasket is leaking.
  2. Clean the gasket with mild soapy water; sticky grime stops it sealing.
  3. Defrost fully for 8-10 hours, wipe dry, then restart and watch for 2 days.

When to call an engineer: Ice returning within days after a full defrost means the defrost system or gasket needs replacement.

Water leaking or pooling under the fridge

Likely causes

  • Blocked defrost drain hole
  • Cracked or displaced drip tray
  • Melting ice from a door seal leak

Safe checks you can do

  1. Find the small drain hole at the back of the fridge compartment and clear it gently with warm water.
  2. Pull out and empty the drip tray at the base.

When to call an engineer: If the leak returns with a clear drain, the drain line or tray likely needs servicing.

Loud noise, buzzing or rattling

Likely causes

  • Fridge not level on the floor
  • Items vibrating on top
  • Failing condenser fan or compressor mount

Safe checks you can do

  1. Level the unit and rock it gently to check stability.
  2. Remove loose items from the top and rear.

When to call an engineer: A metallic grinding or a loud hum with poor cooling should be inspected before the compressor is damaged.

Washing machine

Not draining, not spinning or leaking

Front load, top load, semi and fully automatic machines share the same three usual suspects: the filter, the hose and the load balance.

Machine won't start or nothing happens

Likely causes

  • Door / lid not fully latched
  • Child lock or delay-start active
  • Power socket or fuse issue

Safe checks you can do

  1. Press the door shut until it clicks, then restart the cycle.
  2. Hold the child-lock button for 3 seconds to release it.
  3. Test the socket with another appliance.

When to call an engineer: No response with confirmed power usually means the door lock switch or control board (PCB).

Water not draining / drum stays full

Likely causes

  • Clogged drain filter or pump
  • Drain hose kinked or pushed too far down
  • Faulty drain pump

Safe checks you can do

  1. Switch off, open the small filter door at the bottom front and clear lint, coins and hair.
  2. Straighten the drain hose and keep its end 60-90 cm above the floor.
  3. Run a drain/spin-only cycle to retest.

When to call an engineer: If a clean filter still won't drain and you hear no pump hum, the drain pump needs replacement.

Not spinning or clothes come out soaked

Likely causes

  • Unbalanced or overloaded drum
  • Worn drive belt
  • Drainage fault stopping the spin

Safe checks you can do

  1. Redistribute the load evenly and run spin again with a smaller load.
  2. Wash heavy items like blankets separately.

When to call an engineer: Repeated spin failure points to the belt, motor carbon brushes or the pressure switch.

Leaking water on the floor

Likely causes

  • Loose inlet hose connection
  • Overdosed detergent causing foam overflow
  • Damaged door seal or tub

Safe checks you can do

  1. Hand-tighten the inlet hose at both ends and check the rubber washer.
  2. Use the recommended detergent quantity — extra powder means extra foam.
  3. Wipe the door seal and inspect it for cuts or trapped objects.

When to call an engineer: Water from under the middle of the machine is an internal leak — stop using it and book service.

Bad smell from the drum

Likely causes

  • Damp drum kept closed
  • Detergent residue and biofilm
  • Dirty filter and gasket folds

Safe checks you can do

  1. Run an empty hot cycle (60°C or above) once a month.
  2. Leave the door open after washing so the drum dries.
  3. Wipe the gasket fold and clean the detergent drawer.

When to call an engineer: A persistent smell after cleaning can mean a partially blocked drain retaining water.

Microwave

Not heating, sparking or turntable stuck

Microwaves carry high-voltage parts. Do the outside checks only, and never open the casing yourself.

Microwave runs but food stays cold

Likely causes

  • Wrong mode selected (grill/convection without microwave)
  • Low voltage supply
  • Magnetron or diode failure

Safe checks you can do

  1. Select the plain microwave mode at full power and heat a cup of water for 1 minute.
  2. Plug directly into a wall socket, not an extension board.

When to call an engineer: If water stays cold on full power, the magnetron or high-voltage parts have failed — this is not a DIY repair.

Sparking inside the cavity

Likely causes

  • Metal or foil inside
  • Food splatter burnt onto the walls
  • Damaged waveguide cover or peeling paint

Safe checks you can do

  1. Stop immediately and unplug the unit.
  2. Remove all metal items, including plates with metallic rims.
  3. Clean the cavity with a damp cloth once cool.

When to call an engineer: Sparking from the same spot after cleaning means the waveguide cover or cavity needs repair — keep the unit unplugged.

Turntable not rotating

Likely causes

  • Plate not seated on the coupler
  • Debris in the roller ring
  • Failed turntable motor

Safe checks you can do

  1. Lift the plate, clean the ring and refit it onto the centre coupler.
  2. Check the rollers move freely.

When to call an engineer: A correctly seated plate that still won't turn means the turntable motor.

Display, keypad or door problems

Likely causes

  • Child lock enabled
  • Membrane keypad worn out
  • Door latch / interlock switch fault

Safe checks you can do

  1. Disable the child lock as per your model's button combination.
  2. Unplug for 5 minutes to reset the controller.

When to call an engineer: A door that won't latch or a dead keypad needs part replacement — an unsafe door interlock should never be bypassed.

Safety first

Five rules before you touch any appliance

  • Always unplug the appliance before opening any panel, filter door or cover.
  • Never open a microwave's outer casing — its capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged.
  • Do not top up refrigerator gas yourself; it needs sealed-system tools and correct pressure.
  • Stop using any appliance that smells of burning, trips your MCB, or gives a tingle on touch.
  • Keep water away from the control panel and electrical sockets while checking.
